Description: This eco-type of Sabal minor is well known for its excellent winter hardiness as far north as USDA Zone 6 and its vigorous and larger fronds that reach 5-8 feet tall and wide, the Cape Charles Sabal Palm is a hard to find selection that is sure to add a tropical flare to the landscape. From Cape Charles, Virginia (just south of Washington DC), it is a fan palm that likes growing in rich, moist soils and partially shaded environments. Though this palm grows more like a shrub, over time it will develop a short stout trunk. The huge, deeply-divided palmate evergreen leaves grow 2 to 4 feet long are arranged in the shape of a fan. Showy, white flowers in panicles up to 6 feet long appear in summer. The flowers are followed by shiny black fruits. A dramatic plant that adds year round interest in the landscape. Proven to be solid in zone 6, perhaps colder!
