Description: A stunning, all original and rare example of a 1966, Seiko Sportsmatic 5 featuring a dolphin medallion on the case back. The Sportsmatic is the precursor to the Seiko 5, which was to become the most successful line of mechanical watches in history. The iridescent dial is in near mint condition apart from some aging around the edge near the 7,4 and 3 (see close up pic). Apart from that, the rest of the dial, hands index markers and date window all present stunningly. The case back is worn and because the original engraving was very shallow, The dolphin medallion is a little hard hard to see. The bracelet is not original but is very good quality stainless steel with end pieces that integrate into the case as good as, or better than original. It will fit up to approx. 20.5 cm wrist. The 6619A automatic wind movement is one of the engineering marvels that helped create the reputation for excellence that Seiko has deserved to this day. It has been professionally overhauled/serviced and I confidently guarantee it for 90 days. This Seiko Sportsmatic 5 represents an important chapter in horological history, is in excellent, original condition (except the bracelet) and ticks all the boxes for the serious collector. So I have started adding a photo of the movement, disassembled ready to go through the cleaning machine. All old dried up lubricants, crud and anything else that shouldn't be there is cleaned away. Then, the movement is reassembled, lubricated, adjustments made and regulated. Routinely, the back and the crown seals are replaced (where possible) as are the spring lugs. The case is lightly re-finished if necessary. Also the glass is re-polished if required and possible.Customer satisfaction is our priority. This classic is guaranteed for 90 day from the day of purchase. If there is any problem with your purchase, please contact us and it will be sorted or your money will be refunded.Water resistance and accidental damage is not guaranteed.International buyers; Postage cost includes insurance. The purchaser is responsible for any import duties and taxes. Please be aware that, in recent times, international postage is experiencing longer than usual delays. About vintage mechanical watches:A vintage mechanical watch will not perform like a modern quartz (electronic) watch. Also, with age comes fragility and it may no longer be ideal as a daily wearer. It should be treated for what it is, something old, classical and special. Treat it as you would a vintage car - not ideal to use as a “daily driver”. Keep it in the condition at which you bought it and it will hold or, indeed, increase its value. Use it every day and it will go backwards.SEIKO 5 HISTORY (provided by a colleague trading on Ebay as market*master):First released in late 1963 the Original Seiko 5 is a modified SEIKO SPORTSMATIC.Seiko decided they needed an affordable watch that was versatile and durable. An everyday device that could handle a wide variety of different situations and environments. So was born the '5' concept. The '5' came from the 5 features they wanted to incorporate into the watch. These were:1. Automatic winding2. Day/date display3. Water resistance4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position5. Integrated metal bracelet The '5' was an immediate success and has gone on to become the most successful line of mechanical watches in history.About Me: I am a born again watchmaker! I finished my apprenticeship in 1973 having completed technical training at the RMIT, Melbourne. In the early 80s I went into retail (jewellery and watches). In the mid 90s I came to realise that the watches that once were common had become rare and I began to appreciate their beauty both aesthetically and mechanically. That’s when I started collecting classics. When covid hit, I retired from retail, set up a workshop at home, regained my skills and am now restoring classics with a passion.
