Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Short Line Odyssey Small Railroads in the Northeast By William Young Soft Cover Short Line Odyssey Small Railroads in the Northeast from the '40s to the 70's By William Young Soft Cover Back cover has a scratch and a pinhole. Copyright 1981 58 Pages Almost none of the photographs in this book could be taken today, because they embrace nearly forty years of change: from steam to diesel, from diesel to diesel, and the disappearance of everything from water towers to entire railroads. Even with the new short lines that have bobbed up in the wake of Conrail, there is no telling if the locomotive that was on hand last month will be on hand next month. I began as most do, by photographing to show what things are like; only soon the phrase was, what things had been like: change was making my photographs historical. This was long before I grasped the term "documentary," and longer before I heard a renowned photographer say that photography was art all right-but, remember, applied art. Photography as art is often documentation, and photography as documentation may also be art. If I wish I had been more of a pictorialist in early days, if I seldom make standard portraits of locomotives anymore, I am unable to state that the one is more important than the other. I think I had better say nothing further about art in connection with this book. But it has engine pictures and it has landscapes with trains in them, and it records a fondness for small railroads that is with me still. Much of the credit for that must go to a railroad called the Rahway Valley. In 1941 the Rahway Valley had four steam locomotives and 15 miles of track, and its terminal at Kenilworth, New Jersey, was a mile and a half from where I lived. All pictures are of the actual item. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad. Please email with questions. Publishers of Train Shed Cyclopedias and Stephans Railroad Directories.
