The latest reprint project of ETERNA's original analog tapes in the home country, SACD hybrid release No. 15 This set is the complete set of Sibelius' symphonies recorded by the famous German conductor Kurt Sanderling (1912-2011) at Eterna in East Germany from 1970 to 1977 with his own Berlin Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the principal conductor from 1960. At the time, Eterna had recorded the first, second and seventh symphonies with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Galaguly, the fourth with the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kegel, and the sixth with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Berglund, and Sanderling's cycle begins with the unrecorded third symphony (recorded in 1970) and fifth symphony (recorded in 1971). The excellent performance of these two symphonies created an opportunity to record the complete works, and two discs of the sixth and seventh symphonies and the second symphony were recorded in 1974, the first in 1976, and the fourth in 1977, completing the complete works. Sanderling's Sibelius recordings are characterized by a fusion of skill in expressing the score clearly and meaningfully, and the thickness of the symphonic sound, which makes it a completely unique recording among the complete works. In recent years, performances that delicately express the texture of Sibelius's sound in a cold, transparent sound have become popular, but Sanderling makes the most of the delicate intertwining of sounds and beautifully expresses the strength and scale inherent in Sibelius' music in a natural musical flow. The Eterna recordings from the heyday of analog are not at all irritating, and beautifully reproduce the heavy, organic sound of the orchestra. These masterpieces, which embody Sanderling's musicality in a very concrete way, are worthy of being reproduced in high quality. For this release, we have made a long-awaited reproduction from the original analog master tapes still in existence in his home country. This recording makes full use of the special features of SACD, so we hope that the high sound quality will further increase the evaluation of the performance. For this reissue, the master tape was airlifted from the label to the studio of mastering engineer Christoph Stickel in Vienna, where it was mastered in the analog domain, and then digitized to DSD for the SACD layer and PCM for the CD layer in separate systems before being released for production. This project achieved the most ideal mastering method currently imaginable. The effect is remarkable, as it makes it possible to reproduce the quality remaining on the master tape extremely faithfully, and mastering only in the analog domain and direct DSD conversion has an even greater effect on the sound quality. The clarity and higher resolution compared to previous versions make it possible to expect even greater appreciation of the performance.
