In 1942, David Westheimer's B-24 ditched off the coast of Italy during a bombing raid on the harbor of Naples, the first American plane to be lost over Italy. Behind enemy lines, the author and 6 other survivors of his crew were assigned to the Italian POW camp at Chieti. After 9 months, the Italian guards decamped, giving the POWs a brief brush with freedom. But before they could escape, they were retaken by advancing Germans and transported by a crowded boxcar through the Alps and ultimately to Stalag Luft III, where the author would spend another 19 months before being liberated by American troops in 1945. This memoir describes daily life in the Italian and German POW camps and his enduring friendships. Written at a furious pace shortly after his release, this POW narrative is colorful and rich in detail.
