Description: This birch bark box is in the shape of a mukuk - a way of folding a single piece of birch bark into a container. This small box holds a red trade wool bundle filled with tobacco (a sacred plant) and tied with soft native tanned deer hide. The round lid has an inset piece of bark that fits into the opening of the box. There is a 4 petaled/4 direction design on the top of the lid made of porcupine quills dyed a teal color. Box is 2" x 1.75" rectangle on the bottom, it has a 2.25" diameter opening at the top and it is 2.25" high to top of box (with lid on it is 2.5" high). Lid top is larger than opening (as you can see in photos) lid top is 3.5" in diameter and rim of lid is bound with tidal sweetgrass affixed with faux sinew thread. Rim of box bottom has a braid of tidal sweetgrass as the binding - affixed the same way as sweetgrass on the lid. Paul St John is a registered Mohawk who grew up on his father's Mohawk lands. Paul's mother was Passamaquoddy/Maliseet/Mi'kmaq - he now lives near his mother's relatives in Maine. He grew up visiting with elders of these tribes learning crafts, history and culture from them. - When I saw his work I knew immediately I needed to offer his baskets, quill boxes, dolls and more. Paul is shown in slideshow above with 2 of his works - one of them is a coiled sweetgrass basket with a cardinal. Paul has made many of these baskets with various quill animals, fox, bear, beaver, deer, wolf, moose - and even more birds, cardinal, eagle, loon, blue jay, hawk, hummingbird, great blue heron, chickadee. I am forgetting some I am sure - see if your favorite is in this ebay store. He not only does sweetgrass coil baskets and porcupine quill work on birch bark -- but also amazing dolls, Iroquois beadwork, Wabanaki beadwork, great moccasins, knife sheaths, medicine bags and so much more! He is truly a man of many (many many) talents! Watch this store for more of his pieces. Can't wait to see what he is going to create next.
