Description: The first version of the novel In the First Circle was written by A.I. Solzhenitsyn between 1955 and 1958 without any hope of publication. In 1964, Solzhenitsyn revised the novel, hoping to have it published legally. In this new edition, parts deemed unacceptable by the censors were removed or toned down. However, even in this altered form, the novel was not published and circulated exclusively through samizdat (underground publishing). As a separate edition, in its restored original version, the novel only saw the light of day in 1990. The events of the novel take place in Moscow in December 1949. A Soviet diplomat, an employee of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Innokenty Volodin, makes a phone call to the U.S. Embassy and informs them that Soviet intelligence is preparing to steal information related to the production of the atomic bomb. Employees of the Ministry of State Security (MGB), who are wiretapping the embassy phones, record the conversation on magnetic tape. To identify the caller, the recording is sent to the “sharashka” in Marfino—a secret institute where imprisoned engineers work.
