Description: - Will combine shipping for multiple purchases. Here is a Civilian Military Training Camp City Medal. You have a Medal from the City of Somerville, Massachusetts awarded to SF Towle for Meritorious Service. His name, CMTC and 1932 are engraved. The Medal is complete, includes an intact issue box and is pinned to the bed of the presentation box. The Box is marked Robbins, Attleboro, Massachusetts. This is the first Town or City Medal I have ever located awarded to a Civilian Military Training Camp Member. Given the engraved date of 19332, SF Towle may well have gone on to serve in World War II 9 years later, thus offering a compelling potential research project. The Somerville Medal and Box are in fair to good condition and 91 years old. Thank You! Background: The CMTC was a program instituted after World War I to provide some military training to a wide age range of men who were interested in obtaining some degree of military experience. The program was founded so the country would not be caught so totally unprepared as we were at the outbreak of World War I. The program went right up through 1940 when the European War was a reality and on our horizons. My favorite character from Band of Brothers, Wild Bill Guarnere, (who passed not that long ago), had participated in CMTC right up to 1940 according to his autobiography. He had been working towards earning a commission. Rather, after joining the paratroops, his CMTC experience and natural leadership qualities earned him the rank of sergeant early on while training at Toccoa Stateside.
