King) Ed Sullivan wasn't exactly a champion of R&B, but his show was open to R&B performers at a time when black entertainers in general had a hard time getting prime-time exposure. This compilation draws almost exclusively from the 1950s, although B.B. King does end the set with a performance of his 1970 hit "The Thrill Is Gone." It also features, in blurry fidelity, cuts by Jackie Wilson, Louis Jordan, the Platters, LaVern Baker, and Brook Benton, sometimes with inappropriately square accompaniment by the show's orchestra. The highlight is Bo Diddley's 1955 rendition of his self-titled debut single; one can only imagine the audience reaction to the fierce rock & roller at a time when Elvis Presley had yet to achieve national success.
