Suma or Brazilian ginseng is the roots of a tropical plant in the Amaranthaceae family. It is known by many lating names which are all synonims: Pfaffia Paniculata, Pfaffia glometata and Hebanthe eriantha. Suma root has historically been used in the Amazon rainforest by indigenous tribes to help with a variety of conditions like anxiety, ulcers and digestive issues, pain and stress. It is also used as a tonic for energy, as an aphrodisiac to boost sexuality and fertility, tonic to improve the skin and more! Suma is still widely used today in Brazil, Peru, Equador and Colombia. It is also used by a veriety of amazon indiginous tribes. Suma is rich in a large variety of nutrients, minerals, and other compounds. It contains saponins, pfaffic acids or pfaffosides. Pfaffosides play a role in hormone synthesis, cholesterol and glucose metabolism, cellular oxygenation, and may even inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Suma is also rich in ecdysteroids, a family of hormones linked to reproductive health, hence its use for fertility. HOW TO MAKE SUMA ROOT TEA: The suma dosage for tea is around 10 grams, or one not so full tablespoon. Simply make a tea using one tablespoon of the suma root powder with a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar. Simmer for 10-20 min, and filter with a coffee filter. The suma tea tastes very bitter, honey may improve the flavor. Alternatively you can pack the suma powder into capsules if you cannot cope with the bitter flavor. Dosage for suma capsules should be 3 to 4 grams per day. HOW TO MAKE SUMA TINCTURE: Find a good glass jar with lid and fill it half way with the suma root powder. Add vodka, everclear or any other high proof grain alcohol until the liquid level is at least 5cm (2") above the powdered suma. Add a few drops of white distilled vinegar. Seal jar properly and shake two times per day during one month. When ready, filter out the alcohol with a coffee filter. The suma tincture can now be used as is, or can be left to evaporate in a windy place for a while to achieve a higher concentration (be careful with flames around alcohol). If you leave it to evaporate completely you will get a beautiful and potent resin of suma extract.
