Neem wood is part of the mahogany family. It is harvested from a fast growing, drought resistant, heat tolerant tree that is common throughout India. These drums are made with the densest part of the Neem tree - the root wood. This root wood is dried for months before being cut and hollowed out into the drum shape. This tabla / dayan measures 6 inches at the rim and will tune up nicely to F or G. Precise construction of the syahi (gob) give these drums incredible bell-like clarity.
