Description: Beautiful pair/set of four aquatints coloured by hand racing prints depicting The First Steeple-Chase on record. The pair of aquatints are both 'Drawn by H. Alken. Engraved by J. Harris. London, Published March 1st. 1839, by Ben. Brooks, at his Eclipse Sporting Gallery, 48, High Street. Oxford.' This pair comprises Plate I titled "Ipswich, the Watering-place behind the Barracks", and Plate Il “ Tje large field near Bile’s Corner.” Plate l: Several men, all wearing white nightcaps, on horses, others preparing to mount, soldiers in uniform attending to riders, with barracks in the background; scene illuminated by moonlight circa 1839. and Plate ll: Whoop! And Away! the Major in trouble. Subden’s linen suffers. Plate III: The last field near Nacton Heath — Accomplished Smashers and a run upon the Bank Plate IV: Nacton Church and Village. the finish. A good five still alive— Grand Chorus “The Lads of the Village” Each framed print is. 18 1/2” length x 15” Width x 1” depth. Frames are antique gold and black and in good condition. Ready for hanging. All four prints appear in good condition. Have not taken out of frames to inspect closer.
