Fourteen years old when Franklin Roosevelt ran for reelection in 1936, he was a bolunteer at Democratic headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts. After Pearl Harbor he joined the Marine Corps and was gravely wounded on Olinawa. Discharged as totally disabled, Manchester recovered in graduate school, where he wrote his dissertation on the literary criticism of H.I. Meneken. His first book, a biography of Meneken entitled Disturber of the Peace, was written when he was twenty-seven and was an instant critical success. As a correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, and later as a magazine writer, he has had a front-row seat for the key events of our time since the late 1940s. For many years he has also been a member of the Wesleyan University community, as a teacher and a Fellow of the University. Mr. Manchester's books have been translated into seventeen languages and braille. The two most recent have been the outstanding best sellers The Arms of Krupp and The Death of a President.
