Description: Better than excellent condition. INTRODUCTION. HE SERMON ON THE MOUNT is very near the beginning THE of the New Testament. There has therefore grown up a habit of thinking it, and calling it, the beginning of the Saviour's work. But this habit only belongs to the modern, reckless way of omitting all the perspective of the Gospel narrative, and of huddling together what is found there, because it is all "good," without any question of cause, or motive, or result, or consequence. In truth, Jesus Christ had offered his teachings to his countrymen long before. He had addressed them in Jerusalem again, and again, and again. Three times they had driven him away. The last time, they tried to kill him. Of these experiences the Gospel of John gives us the history. It is after these failures to arouse Jerusalem, it is after John Baptist has been cast into prison, that the Saviour makes his appeal, not to Jerusalem now, but to Galilee. He appeals to the country, and no longer to Jerusalem. He appeals to the people, and not to the priests. Everywhere he proclaims that "the kingdom of God is at hand." At once his fame goes through all Syria. He passes from village to village with a little circle of friends. He comes to the town where he was brought up, to Nazareth. Nazareth is proud of its prophet. He has brought distinction on poor little Nazareth; for it seems that a Nazarene can be talked of in Jerusalem, in Caesarea, in Tyre and Sidon. All
