Description: Up for sale is a very lovely leather (suede) bound booklet containing a poem by a noted American author of the Romantic movement. Title: The Vision of Sir LaunfalAuthor: James Russell LowellPublisher: Thomas Y. Crowell & Company (New York)Date: There is no date printed in this book. It must have been printed prior to Christmas, 1903, as that was when the inscription (see in photo # 3 of this listing) was handwritten. Soft cover with suede leather binding. Pages: 28 numbered pages. (The poem begins on page 7.) Just under 7.25 inches tall by about 4.75 inches wide James Russell Lowell (1819 - 1891) was one of the "fireside poets", a group of New England writers whose popularity (in America) rivaled that of their British contemporaries. He was a graduate of Harvard College and of Harvard Law School. He was a notable figure in the abolitionist movement. Perhaps his most famous work was The Biglow Papers, a satire in opposition to The Mexican War (and other wars). Lowell was the first editor of The Atlantic Monthly. He also had a career as a diplomat including serving as the American Ambassador to Spain and, later, to the United Kingdom (Court of Saint James). The Vision of Sir Launfal is Lowell's new treatment of the legend of the Holy Grail and its pursuit by the Knights of King Arthur's Round Table. In a brief prose introduction to this poem, Lowell states: ".... The plot (if I may give that name to anything so slight) of the ... poem is my own, and to serve its purposes, I have enlarged the circle of competition in search of the miraculous cup in such a manner as to include, not only other persons than the heroes of the Round Table, but also a period of time subsequent to King Arthur's reign."
