Description: Two Traditionally Dressed Syrian dolls, purchased during WWII by father who was a Pan American Airlines pilot, transferred into the Air Transport Command flying trans-Atlantic during the war. Both these dolls are wonderful, authentic Baronne Sandra Belling dolls, both tagged with Arouani Brothers who sold dolls for Sandra Belling. Both dolls show ink stamped Syrian authorization, perhaps a tax stamp ? Collectors will know, but just a note on Baronne Belling: she was a Russian aristocrat who after fleeing to Syria at the time of the Russian Revolution had to make a living and designed dolls in the likeness of those she saw around her. She taught local women to make up traditional costumes for dolls to accompany the faces Belling designed. One of these dolls is a Syrian Desert Bedouin, measuring 11 1/2 inches tall and one a traditionally dressed Syrian man in Fez hat, measuring 10 1/2 inches tall. Both wear leather shoes with felt soles. Note the great detail painted on stockinette faces. Their hands are in good conditio, but show some wear to the metal wire structure of the fingers. The Desert Bedouin has some staining on the robes fabric. His headdress has wonderful flower detailing and his waist is tied with an elegant silk rope. Please look at various details in pictures. These dolls have been lovingly cared for in my family for 80 years, always a non-smoking environment and no bugs, tears, etc. Some wear, described in detail and/or shown in pictures, commensurate with age. Good offers and / or any questions always welcome.
