The PRU teams were composed of local soldiers who were recruited and trained to operate in the areas where they lived.Each PRU team was responsible for conducting reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition operations against Viet Cong forces, as well as capturing or killing high-value targets. The teams also worked closely with American and ARVN Special Forces units to gather intelligence and carry out joint operations.The PRU teams were known for their effectiveness in gathering intelligence and conducting operations in difficult terrain, including urban areas. However, they were also controversial due to their use of brutal tactics, such as torture and summary execution, in the course of their operations.Despite these controversies, the PRU program was considered to be an important component of the ARVN's counterinsurgency efforts.
