Description: VINTAGE THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD BY CHARLES DICKENSILLUSTRATED BY CRUIKSHANK & PHIZSIGNED BY VINCENT STARRETTTHE OXFORD INDIA PAPER DICKENS, COMPLETE EDITION FROM THE PERSONAL LIBRARY OF VINCENT STARRETTVINCENT STARRETT COLLECTION BOOKPLATE OF VINCENT STARRETT World Famous Sherlockian Author & Scholar Charles Vincent Emerson Starrett was born above his grandfather's bookshop in Canada. His father moved the family to Chicago in 1889.Starrett landed a job as a cub reporter with the Chicago Inter-Ocean in 1905. When that paper folded two years later, he began working for the Chicago Daily News as a crime reporter, a feature writer, and finally a war correspondent in Mexico from 1914 to 1915. Starrett turned to writing mystery and supernatural fiction for pulp magazines during the 1920s and 1930s.In 1920, he wrote a Sherlock Holmes pastiche entitled The Adventure of the Unique "Hamlet". Starrett on at least one occasion said that the press run was 100 copies, but on others claimed 200: a study of surviving copies by Randall Stock documents 110. This story involved the detective investigating a missing 1602 inscribed edition of Shakespeare's play Hamlet.Starrett's most famous work, The Private lives of Sherlock Holmes, was published in 1933. Following that, Starrett wrote a book column, "Books Alive," for the Chicago Tribune. He retired after 25 years of the column in 1967. Starrett was one of the founders of the hounds of Baskerville, a Chicago chapter of the Baker Street Irregulars.Starrett's horror/fantasy stories were written primarily for the pulp magazine Weird Tales, and are collected in The Quick and the Dead, (Arkham House, 1965). His story "Penelope," published in the May 1923 issue of Weird Tales, was also featured in the anthology The Moon Terror (1927) anonymously edited by Farnsworth Wright and published by the magazine.Starrett's other writing included poetry, collected in Autolycus in Limbo, (Dutton, 1943), detective novels, such as Murder on 'B' Deck, (Doubleday, 1929, and others). He had also created his own detective character, Chicago sleuth Jimmie Lavender, whose adventures usually first appeared in the pulp magazine Short Stories. The name Jimmie Lavender was that of an actual pitcher for the Chicago Cubs; Starrett wrote to ask the ball player for permission to use his name for a gentleman detective, which the pitcher granted. The stories are collected in The Case Book of Jimmie Lavender (Gold Label, 1944).Starrett was a major enthusiast of Welsh writer Arthur Welsh and was instrumental in bringing Machen's work to an American audience for the first time.He died in Chicago on January 5,1974 and was buried at Graceland Cemetery next to his wife, Rachel Latimer Starrett. His influential weekly column "Books Alive" ran in the Chicago Tribune for 25 years. He also wrote Best Loved Books of the 20th Century, a collection of 52 essays discussing popular works, published in 1955A complete edition of Starrett's works is being published by George Vanderburgh’s Battered Silicon Dispatch Box a print-on-demand publisher, with 22 of a projected 25 volumes already in print. A publication in the Vincent Starrett Memorial Library is Sherlock Alive, compiled and edited by Karen Murdock, and first printed in August 2010. Sherlock Alive is a collection of the Sherlockian references from Starrett's "Books Alive" column. Book is in fragile condition with part of spine detached but present. Outer layer of board peeling. OUR INVENTORY # SA2008 We recently purchased a 5000+ item book collection of Richard M Lackritz, M.D., Famous Detective Murder Mystery and Sherlockian collector from the San Antonio Texas area. 4000+ Books and 1000+ magazines, pamphlets, book cover art, Strand Magazines, publications, and numerous one-of-a-kind items were included. There are also photos, signed correspondences from authors, illustrators, publishers and fellow collectors, all types of signed event programs and miscellaneous other documents included. The family donated this collection from the doctor’s estate in 2020. We were told his family donated the collection to the San Antonio Independent School District annual book sale. Due to pandemic restrictions, the book drive was postponed for 2 years. Because of continual school restrictions, the books donated were sold in one lot to a local person, as the district needed the storage space and to reduce storage costs until the next year when hopefully restrictions would again allow them to have their annual book sale. We were able to purchase the entire donation/collection from this single buyer in February 2022. So far, from the boxes we have reviewed, these books range in value from $20 - $7500, with our limited research. There are around 150 boxes of items total. There appears to be a lot of treasures in this collection. It is for us, a once in a lifetime find. There are numerous 1980 - 2005 limited editions with slipcases and signed Copy #1 or Letter “A” presentation books sealed in original shrinkwrap from publishers. Dr. Lackritz had the connections and got the best of the best. There is also about 200 books from the Vincent Starrett personal library with his bookplate(s) and signature. There are numerous other books with other popular Sherlockian/Detective/Crime/Mystery collectors’ bookplates and signatures. There are books by Authors like Doyle, Christie, Twain, Poe, Bradbury, Ismacc, Meade, Ellery Queen, Hammett, Dickens, Hume, Collier, Freeman and others. There are also some rare True 1st editions, signed obscure and other unique books, publications and ephemera. Three auctions were held in 2002-2003 by Christie’s. Catalogs and dates from these auctions are included in this listing for your review. Prices realized in these three auctions was around $1.8 Million dollars. We assume the books left were personal items saved and duplicates of some books auctioned. Christie’s did not want to dilute prices for similar books and items in the auctions. Or, at that time in 2002, they did not met Christie’s $ price point or quality at time of auction. Most of these have increased in value with some up 10-fold in the last 20 years. These vary in condition. We will do our best to describe the condition and take quality photos for your review. We will be sure to photograph the copyright pages and any other identification marks for correct editions and printings. We are not experts in rare books & ephemera but are somewhat knowledgeable from selling books, magazines, and other ephemera for several years. We recently sold about 500 books from actor Montgomery Clift’s personal collection. We will be listing 100’s of items each week until everything has been listed.
