Description: Western Auto was iconic in the 20th Century. Small towns could support them and they sold everything in more intimate settings than Sears. Like Sears they sold high quality tools which were manufactured under contracts with well-known tool makers. This Phillips Screw Driver (H383) is perplexing because it fits none of the useful tells and guides that help determine when a tool was manufactured. The Stampings on the Screw Driver shaft provides some information. “PHILLIPS-LIC.7” identifies the manufacturer as “BRIDGEPORT—U.S.A.” which is Bridgeport Hardware. The “PAT. 2507231” says that the tool was produced after 1950 when the patent was issued. One inconsistency is the branding as WESTERN AUTO” on the Ferule as Wizard and Westcraft are more commonly used. Our best guess is that the Screw Driver was produced in the mid- to late 1950s and perhaps into the 1960s though “plastic” and other materials were becoming commonplace for handles. Regardless of its age it is in fully functional condition. There is significant evidence of use, including use of pliers or adjustable wrenches gripping the Wood Handle above the Ferule to improve torque (see images). Nonetheless, the Screw Driver has handled it well. There is corrosion on the Shaft and Ferule as expected of an old, unused tool. The Screw Driver could be put to work or cleaned-up a bit and added to a Show-and-Tell collection.
