Description: Whitey Bulger Authentic Handwriting Sample Alcatraz Mafia Photo Display This auction is for a small (5x7 Inch) display, which includes an original, fully authentic, handwriting sample from the notorious organized crime figure James “Whitey” Bulger. The small sample, cut from a letter dated June 22, 2014 (postmarked June 25th) on yellow legal paper, was written by Bulger while incarcerated at United States Federal Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona. The small cut segment has been affixed to a custom display with his Alcatraz mugshot portrait. The handwriting sample included in this display was penned following his trial, while isolated in his prison cell. As it was determined that the principal content of the letter would not be released, the letter was cut into fragments with select sections mounted into small displays for historical collectors. The accompanying fragment was extracted from that letter. I obtained this while aiding on a history project chronicling Bulger's criminal life and years on Alcatraz. Bulger led Boston's Winter Hill Gang, leaving a trail of violence and corruption. His early criminal career included stints in juvenile detention and prison. Alcatraz was a chapter in his story. Imprisoned there for bank robbery in 1959, he kept a low profile, but his criminal ambitions remained. Released in 1965, Bulger rose within the Winter Hill Gang. It is alleged that he also acted as an FBI informant against rivals, using this to protect his own criminal activities. This double life led to his flight in 1994. After 16-years as a fugitive, rising to #1 on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, he was captured and sentenced to life, convicted of racketeering, 11 murders, extortion, money laundering, and weapons charges. He was murdered in 2018 by a known hitman from the Italian Mafia in prison. Bulger remains one of the most infamous organized crime figures in American history. NOTE: Does not include display stand. CONDITION: There are some very light scuffs in the plastic of the display case, and the display card with the signature is not perfectly centered. The photos accurately reflect the condition of the display and affixed artifact.
