Chapter 1 begins: ‘You do not know what flat is until you have driven through Kansas.’ Shy Edgar was obsessed with flight after a spin in a PT-19 trainer. After high school he accompanies a pal to an Army Air Corps exam, and unexpectedly scores well himself. He gets though flight school and winds up piloting a big four-engine Consolidated B-24 ‘Liberator’ bomber. One vignette shows 1940s charm – his pride at seeing 100s of cadets march on the parade ground. Alone between postings, the sudden realization that he’s on his own far from family brings tears. Till he stares into the mirror and tells himself to just do his best. The book exudes wonder that humans can rise above flatbread Kansas to the clouds. No wonder Midwest diction came to dominate the early decades of aviation.A ‘peace-loving farm boy at heart’, Allen’s text and photos show that military targets, such as gun emplacements in France and marshalling yards in Germany, were their plane’s legitimate aims – not civilian populations like the people of Dresden memorialized by Kurt Vonnegut in Slaughterhouse 5. The Allen crew braved the flak, enemy fighters, dodgy weather and zero visibility of 30 missions for the 8th Air Force (which suffered a mortality rate of 7.5%, i.e. worse than the Marines). Air battles were interspersed with leaves in London, for cultural and amatory pursuits with a favorite lady named Thelma. Leaving Britain around Victory in Europe Day 1945 brought relief from fear – but also poignant goodbye kisses, and realization of untangling camaraderie as the B-24 crew separate for civilian life.
