Description: Original WW2 WAR OFFICE STAMPED (ITALIAN) aviation map which was OFFICIALLY USED for the creation of British military maps of ITALY. When creating new military maps, governments often source up to date civilian mapping for increased accuracy. Such sources are usually quoted in the 'Compilation Authorities' section in the margin. When studying WW2 British military maps of Italy I have previously seen reference to 'Carta Aeronautica d'Italia' and this particular example was clearly held officially by the War Office's 'Geographical Section General Staff' (GSGS) as it bears their ink stamp dated 20th October 1941. The original map seems to date from the early 1930's and features LOCARNO and BELLINZONA at its centre. As a civilian map it looks much more stylish than its military counterpart and would make an interesting framed display piece. It was finally removed from the British military archive with a 'CANCELLED' ink stamp which, from others I've seen, appears to date to the mid-1970's. It then passed to Edinburgh University (hence their own ink stamping) who recently sold it as part of a much larger collection. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) military maps.
